Our Garden Soil Prep Routine for the Texas Panhandle
If you’re planning a vegetable garden this season, it starts below the surface.
Here in the Panhandle, our soil needs a little help getting ready. It’s often dense, compact, and clay-heavy—which makes it tough for roots to grow and nutrients to move.
What you put in now makes all the difference later—strong roots, better yields, and healthier plants.
At Pete’s Greenhouse, we always recommend building your soil in layers before you plant. Think of it as creating a strong foundation your garden can grow on all season long.
Before anything goes in the ground, start by improving your soil structure. These foundational amendments can all be worked into your soil at the same time, ideally about 4–6 inches deep.
A nutrient-rich blend of cattle manure and cotton burr compost. This is your bulk amendment—the one that helps break up hard clay soil and adds organic matter.
Tip: Add about 2 inches each year to keep soil healthy and workable.
Improves aeration and supports root development with beneficial fungi and humic acid. It helps your soil actually use the nutrients you’re adding.
A powerhouse for soil health. It improves structure, increases moisture retention, and helps nutrients become more available to plants. Especially helpful in both clay and sandy soils.
Great for breaking up heavy clay and improving drainage. It also adds calcium and sulfur.
Note: Not every garden needs this—but it can make a big difference in tough soils.
Once your base is set, it’s time to enrich it with nutrients that feed both your plants and your soil. These can be worked into the top 1–3 inches.
An all-natural fertilizer that feeds beneficial microbes and earthworms, helping nutrients break down into a form your plants can use.
Use: Every 30–45 days during the growing season.
One of the best natural soil conditioners out there. Packed with nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in a slow-release form that won’t burn your plants.
Use: 2–3 times per growing season.
When it’s finally time to plant, this is where you give each plant its best start. These products go directly into the planting hole or root zone.
A powerful combo for root development.
Mykos introduces beneficial fungi that help roots expand and access nutrients.
Azos naturally boosts nitrogen and speeds up root growth.Use together for stronger, faster-growing plants.
Provides both immediate nutrients and slow-release feeding. Great for overall plant strength, growth, and blooms.
Use: Every 3–4 months.
Helps reduce transplant shock and encourages quick root establishment.
Use: At planting and weekly until established.
After everything is planted, don’t skip this step—it’s what protects all your hard work.
Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Refresh as needed throughout the season.
A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer that supports steady, healthy growth across vegetables, flowers, and more.
Use: About once a week or every other watering.
Tip: Switch to Bloom Max when you’re ready to push flower production.
Healthy soil isn’t just dirt—it’s a living system. When you take the time to build it correctly from the start, everything else becomes easier.
You’ll see:
And ultimately… a garden that works with you, not against you.
