In our latest Garden Club feature, we had the privilege of exploring Joshua’s stunning tropical garden. Joshua, an outdoor design and landscaping enthusiast, has transformed his backyard into a luxurious, tropical escape, blending vibrant plants and smart design elements. His pool yard garden showcases his expertise and passion for creating immersive green spaces. Since moving into his current home in 2020, Joshua has meticulously crafted this garden to be both a relaxing retreat and a feast for the senses.

The Pool Yard: A Tropical Paradise

Joshua’s pool yard is a true tropical paradise. Centered around a shimmering pool, the space is surrounded by lush, exotic plants that thrive in the warm, sunny environment. A unique floating planter in the pool adds an extra layer of greenery to the water, creating a harmonious blend of nature and design.

Framing the pool, a brick planter holds a variety of striking plants, from the bold elephant ear plant to towering Phoenix palms and Mexican fan palms, which provide a beautiful tropical canopy. Joshua’s attention to detail is evident in his plant choices, with each species adding its own texture, color, and charm to the space.

Foliage and Ferns: A Lush Green Scene

Joshua has cultivated a variety of ferns and tropical plants that transport you to a faraway rainforest. Macho ferns and foxtail ferns provide a soft, feathery backdrop, while the structured Myers asparagus adds texture and intrigue to the landscape. The striking Duranta offers delicate purple blooms, complementing the vibrant hues of croton plants, which bring pops of yellow, red, and orange to the scene.

In addition, the towering Egyptian papyrus adds a vertical element, its unique form catching the eye as it sways in the breeze. Paired with the oversized leaves of Colocasia, the garden has an unmistakably tropical vibe that’s both serene and visually captivating.

Vibrant Blooms and Cool Shade

Amidst the greenery, Joshua has skillfully integrated colorful blooms, such as the vibrant pink coleus and sun patients, which add splashes of color to the landscape. These flowers thrive under the garden’s shade sails, which provide relief from the summer heat while enhancing the space’s modern aesthetic.

One of the most significant features of the yard is the presence of an old elm tree, which anchors the garden and provides much-needed shade. Beneath its branches, Elysium grows, offering a delightful fragrance and further adding to the garden’s soothing atmosphere.

A Garden Anchored by Hydrangeas

Joshua’s pool yard wouldn’t be complete without his stunning hydrangea collection. Panicle hydrangeas, with their conical flower heads, rise elegantly among the other plants. The show doesn’t stop there—Pinky Winky hydrangeas and Nantucket blue hydrangeas lend their soft hues to the garden, with blooms that change in color as the seasons progress. These hydrangeas provide a lush, romantic touch, rounding out the tropical feel with their lavish floral display.

Jasmine and Boxwood: Classic Elegance

Adding to the beauty of the garden is the intoxicating scent of jasmine, which fills the air with its sweet perfume, making every corner of the yard a sensory delight. Joshua has also planted variegated English boxwood for a touch of structure and formality. These classic shrubs create a sense of balance amid the wild, free-flowing tropical plants.

The Finishing Touches: Shade and Sculpted Plants

In addition to the shade sails, Joshua has thoughtfully planted a variety of plants near the seating area where you can relax in the dappled sunlight. The entire space is designed for enjoyment, whether lounging by the pool or walking among the plants.
