If you’ve ever wondered how far creativity, patience, and a deep love for nature can take a yard in the Texas Panhandle, Briana and Vaden Carthel’s backyard in Amarillo is proof that the possibilities are endless. As the owners of Carthel Outdoors—and passionate gardeners, landscapers, and adventure seekers—they’ve transformed a blank yard into a living, breathing ecosystem in just 2.5 years. Their approach blends sustainability, artistry, and a touch of whimsy, making it a must-see inspiration for anyone interested in Amarillo gardening.
Briana and Vaden’s journey began with a simple goal: create a backyard full of life. They practice chaos gardening, scattering a mix of more than 30 wildflower varieties to attract pollinators and boost biodiversity. Cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers, and Italian basil now mingle together, with winding paths and tucked-away seating areas that invite visitors to slow down and take it all in.
Their pollinator-friendly approach isn’t just beautiful—it’s practical. By encouraging biodiversity, they reduce pest problems naturally, meaning fewer chemicals and a healthier garden. Hand-pollinating squash, cucumbers, and peas ensures big harvests, while a sprinkle of dry molasses in the soil makes their cucumbers extra sweet.
One of the most striking features in their Amarillo backyard is their self-sustaining pond, surrounded by lush elephant ears—a Pete’s Greenhouse favorite. The fish have even reproduced on their own, and the pond now provides food and shelter for birds, bees, and other beneficial creatures. The Carthels store the elephant ear bulbs in a dark garage over winter, ready to replant each spring—a great tip for Panhandle gardeners.
The entire Carthel garden is organic. They manage pests with spinosad soap, invite snails to stay, and focus on abundance over perfection. This philosophy means there’s enough for everyone—humans, pollinators, and even the occasional pest.
From emerald green dent corn (perfect for green cornbread!) to rare raspberry bushes that thrive thanks to amended soil, Briana and Vaden show that you can grow almost anything in Amarillo if you create the right environment. Companion planting with sweet alyssum and clover adds beauty and natural nitrogen to their soil—no synthetic fertilizers required.
Standing up to 18 feet tall, their Mongolian giant sunflowers are impossible to miss. Started from seed, these giants will soon be roasted and salted for a homegrown snack. Other beds feature butternut squash, melons, and tomatoes—many of which will reseed naturally for next year’s harvest.
Travel influences the Carthels’ creativity, and their time in Germany and the Czech Republic inspired their castle gardenstyle. Their honeysuckle gazebo fills the air with fragrance, while newly planted pear trees will one day form a living archway. Over 200,000 wildflower seeds ensure a changing landscape of blooms throughout the seasons.
Pergolas draped in English ivy, Virginia creeper, and grapevines create shaded retreats perfect for winter gatherings. Peach trees are trained along lattice walls for beauty and convenience.
While their backyard is a personal retreat, their front yard will soon be a gift to the community. Plans include perennial wildflower beds and a nature walk complete with plant signage. A corner bed of cosmos and zinnias already attracts monarch butterflies well into the fall.
Briana and Vaden’s garden proves that gardening in Amarillo is about more than battling wind, heat, and unpredictable weather—it’s about working with nature, fostering biodiversity, and thinking creatively. From self-sustaining ponds to giant sunflowers and castle-inspired garden rooms, their backyard shows that with the right vision, you can grow beauty anywhere in the Texas Panhandle.
Whether you’re just starting your own backyard project or looking for new ideas to bring your garden to life, Briana and Vaden’s story is a reminder: the best Amarillo gardens are grown with passion, patience, and a little bit of chaos.
