In this latest episode of our Garden Club series, we visit Jordi and Devin’s front yard as they prep their beds for fall. Their garden is a perfect example of how you can achieve beautiful curb appeal with minimal upkeep.
Jordi and Devin have focused on foundational plantings that don’t demand constant attention. Their yews have stayed neat without frequent trimming, and their boxwoods are only pruned a few times a year. A Scott’s Globe spruce adds a lovely blue hue to their garden, which is echoed by a large blue pot that, while needing occasional spraying for spider mites, requires very little watering.
One of the stars of their garden is a large elephant ear plant. To prepare it for winter, they take out the Alicia bulb, trim the leaves, clean it, and store it in a dark, dry place in the garage. Come spring, it’s ready to make a comeback!
Jordi and Devin plant multi-colored pansies in the fall, knowing they’ll be a gorgeous statement come spring. With proper care—like feeding with Pete’s Pansy Max—the pansies can thrive for up to nine months! Their beds are also mulched with cedar, a natural and low-maintenance option that makes cleaning leaves a breeze without disturbing the mulch.
A whimsical touch to their yard is a meditating gnome, reminding everyone to find some peace and quiet in the garden.
In the sunnier areas of their garden, they’ve anchored their space with two hollies by the window and a row of boxwoods behind them. Low-maintenance hostas and annual begonias round out this serene yet vibrant display.
In their second video, Jordi brings us to her front porch to show how she combines plants and pumpkins for an autumnal feel. She shares more about Pete’s Porch Pumpkin service, a delivery option for creating beautiful fall displays.
Jordi likes to mix tropical plants and fall favorites in her porch pots. This year, she’s loving the combination of croton, celosia, ornamental peppers, and pumpkins. To add height and texture, she tucks purple fountain grass and hens and chicks succulents behind the pumpkins. If a hard freeze hits, the plants can easily be brought inside and set out again the next day.
Her mums, grown at Pete’s Greenhouse, get special care too. Instead of watering them from the top, she places the pots in saucers of water so the roots can absorb moisture from below.
Her porch is completed with a Boston fern and hanging baskets, which give the space a lush, welcoming look.
Jordi and Devin also remind viewers to stop by Pete’s Greenhouse this Saturday for our Fall Makers Market and Open House! It’s a great chance to shop local and get inspired for your own fall garden.
