Dahlias are a wonderful choice for your summer garden because their colorful blooms really stand out! They come in a variety of colors and sizes and are very versatile in the garden.
Dahlias are similar to geraniums in that they like 5-6 hours of sunlight each day, and then shade. Plant larger dahlias about 3 feet apart. Smaller dahlias require less space and can be planted closer. Try to keep the area where your dahlias are planted as weed free as possible, which can be helped by adding mulch.
Similarly again to a geranium, you don’t want to keep your dahlia wet. Let them dry down just a little bit. And you’ll want to deadhead a dahlia when it gets done blooming. Just follow it down (you may have to sacrifice a leaf or two) and simply cut it off. Leave a little bit of a nub and you’re all set!
