Location and watering are the keys to caring for your annual begonias. They need full sun to shaded location. If they are planted in a full sun location, our hot summer days might stress them which makes your begonia plant susceptible to disease. So in our area and because of our extremely hot summers, it is especially important to plant begonias where they will get afternoon shade.
Deadheading spent blooms and keeping the soil moist are two of the most important factors in annual begonia care. The soil should remain moist, but not too wet. Try a well-draining soil or potting mix to help with this. If you have wax begonias, water them at the base to prevent leaf spot and fungus. For a compact and healthy begonia, be sure to deadhead and pinch back regularly. Before a frost, annual begonia can be cut back and used as a houseplant in the winter. Once your begonia is inside, keep the soil moist, use a pebble tray to provide humidity and place in bright, filtered light.
